Mindful Movement:
The Intersection of Yoga and Somatics for Marginalized Bodies
At All Bodies Yoga, we understand that traditional wellness practices can often be exclusionary towards marginalized bodies. However, we also know that everyone deserves access to healing practices that support their individual needs and experiences. That’s why we’re excited to explore the intersection of yoga and somatics, two practices that can support healing and self-care for all bodies.
Somatics is a practice that focuses on cultivating awareness of the body through gentle, mindful movement. It can be especially helpful for individuals with chronic pain, disabilities, or who are recovering from injury, as it encourages the body to move in ways that feel safe and supportive. By incorporating somatics into our yoga practice, we can cultivate a deeper sense of awareness and connection with our bodies, allowing for a more gentle and compassionate approach to movement.
Research has shown that practicing yoga and somatics can lead to significant improvements in physical and mental well-being for individuals with chronic pain or disabilities. A study published in the Journal of Pain Research found that practicing yoga led to significant reductions in pain and anxiety for individuals with chronic pain (Cheung et al., 2021). Additionally, a systematic review of somatics research found that somatic practices were effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life for individuals with chronic pain or disabilities (Huang et al., 2021).
At All Bodies Yoga, we believe that mindful movement is essential for supporting the healing and well-being of all bodies. By incorporating somatics into our yoga practice, we can create a space that encourages mindful movement, cultivates body awareness, and supports healing and self-care. We invite you to join us in exploring the intersection of yoga and somatics, and discover the transformative power of mindful movement for marginalized bodies.
We offer a variety of classes that incorporate somatics into our yoga practice, including gentle yoga, restorative yoga, and chair yoga. Our experienced instructors are trained to provide modifications and adjustments to ensure that our classes are accessible and inclusive for all bodies. We also offer our classes for free by donation, eliminating financial barriers to access and making our healing practices available to everyone.
Join us at All Bodies Yoga, where we celebrate the diversity of all bodies and cultivate a space that supports healing and self-care for marginalized communities.
